A Creative Approach

Younger Children

Younger children naturally make sense of their world using play and the arts, as such this can be an excellent form of communication for working with younger children. Sometimes children do not have the vocabulary to talk about how they are feeling or what is happening for them or they may not understand or be able to verbalise their feelings. Using the metaphor within the arts and play can help me to communicate effectively with your child in a way that they can understand. Using art and play therapeutically can also help to build self esteem and tackle social situations younger children may find difficult.

Adolescents

Whilst the arts can also be extremely therapeutically effective with adults and teenagers I appreciate that older children and teenagers may not want to use this way of working. With this in mind I will always have the arts available and offer them in our sessions but I leave it up to the young person whether they would like to use this modality. Teenagers are more likely to be able to articulate what is happening for them and may choose instead to talk through their issues.
